A Word of Encouragement from Elizabeth Rice Handford
When Albert Einstein was five years old and sick, his father gave him a magnetic compass to play with. He was fascinated. As he watched that needle swing inevitably to the same place no matter where he pointed it, he thought, “Something—Some One?—is out there!”
It became Einstein’s life-long quest to discover the secrets of the universe. What were its rules? How could the mysteries of this earth be solved? For there certainly are conflicting theories in physics, in math, in biology, and in astronomy, theories that are irreconcilable. Einstein hoped maybe his theory of relativity would resolve all of them—but scientists cannot even reconcile his theory of relativity with the new superstring theories.
Darwin’s theory of evolution, for example, conjectures that a single-cell creature ultimately evolved into the infinitely complex human bodies we possess, and that it happened without any outside agency such as God. But that theory totally contradicts the second law of thermodynamics which says, simplified, a closed system always tends to entropy and chaos.
NASA: “The Hand of God”
George Johnson, a science columnist for the New York Times, wrote: “Physicists struggle to unify quantum mechanics and general relativity, the two hitherto irreconcilable pillars of modern physics.” He adds, “A new wave of discoveries is fomenting what some physicists are excitedly hailing as a third revolution, leading toward a day when all the laws of creation may fit into a single, elegant frame.” How scientists long for a reconciliation of all of those contradictory theories! They passionately want “the laws of creation” to fit together.
It’s interesting that Johnson uses the word “creation,” because creation implies a Creator. And, of course, if someone doesn’t believe there is a God, then no matter how well-educated and intelligent he is, the universe will continue to be contradictory and inexplicable to him.
In October 2023, NASA released a picture of an x-ray caught by the spectroscope NuSTAR. It reveals a cloud of material ejected from a star that exploded millions of miles from earth. The NASA scientists named the photo “The Hand of God.”
NASA got it right. God’s creation reveals Him. Our world demonstrates the fact that He exists, and that He has incredible power. Hebrews 1:3,4 says: “Through the Son, God made the universe and everything in it. The Son reflects God’s own glory, and everything about Him represents God exactly. He sustains the universe by the mighty power of his command.” Every person on earth can plainly hear the message His creation declares about God. Psalm 19:1-4 (nlt) says,
The heavens tell of the glory of God.
The skies display His marvelous craftsmanship.
Day after day they continue to speak; Night after night they make Him known.
They speak without a sound or a word; Their voice is silent in the skies;
Yet their message has gone out to all the earth, And their words to all the world.
Our incredible, awesome universe reveals our incredible, awesome Creator, the High and only God. We poor humans can’t comprehend it all. But we can listen to the message of the stars with humility and surrender to the God who made them. There certainly is a “law of creation,” established by the Almighty God who created it all to show us human beings how much He loves us.
